CMS 3rd Quarter Report ID’s Hospitals & Physicians Receiving EHR Incentive Payments & More

CMS is required by the HITECH act to publish the Eligible Hospitals (EH’s) and Eligible Professionals (EP’s) that have received EHR Incentive Payments by demonstrating Meaningful Use of a certified EHR system. EP’s receiving payments under the Medicare EHR Incentive Program include Doctors of Medicine or Osteopathy, dentists, optometrists, podiatrists, and chiropractors. Recipients are published quarterly and spreadsheets for those receiving payments as of the 3rd quarter of 2012 may be downloaded at:

The CMS November 2012 EHR Incentive Program Report has also been released. As of November 30, 2012 over $9.3B dollars in incentive payments have been distributed under the Medicare and Medicare programs.

EH’s paid under the program are now reported as “Unique Providers Paid”. EH’s may be paid under both the Medicare and Medicaid program. Previous reports had double counted hospitals receiving payments under both programs. Now with hospitals being reported once, there is an apparent decrease in hospitals receiving payments but it is a more accurate representation of participation.

EP participation continues to lag EH participation, both in registration and in payments. Those EP’s not demonstrating Meaningful Use in calendar year 2013 will be subject to penalties starting in 2015.

Of the 96,426 EP’s receiving payments under the Medicare EHR Incentive Program, 86,859 are physicians. CMS also reports the physician specialties being paid under the Medicare programs. Family practitioners and internists continue to be the most predominate specialties with almost 26,000 participants.

The monthly payments under the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs has been updated. These increase towards the end of the attestation periods which is December 2012 for EH’s and February 2013 for EP’s. This is the last opportunity to receive the full inventive payment which will drop for those demonstrating meaningful use next year.
